Halloween is upon us, and with it lots and lots of candy and chocolates! In some cases more than what we know what to do with. The last few years my son usually gets double what other children may get because he is young (just turned 5!) and people generally tend to want to spoil the little ones. But he obviously cannot eat ALL that candy and chocolate so my husband and I take one for the team and eat what we can.

A few months back I had seen a leftover halloween candy cookie bars recipe from Butternut Bakery and I thought what a great idea! So I applied the concept to my Black Cocoa Cookies - super easy and all you need to do is add your favorite leftover Halloween candy to these cookies!

Why You Will Love These Cookies

Make And Bake Quickly! The original Monster Mash cookies come together easily, and this variation with Halloween chocolate candy does too!

Fun To Make With The Kids! Let your kids pick the chocolates they want to use! They will love adding them on top and eating afterwards! Caution: Sugar High is inevitable!

If Halloween treats are your thing then I recommend heading over and trying my Double Chocolate Cookie Bars! There is also a tutorial to make them Jack Skellington themed!

    Tips For Success

This tutorial to create Halloween chocolate candy cookies is extremely easy, and made as such so that you may enjoy creating delicious but spooky treats at home with the kids! Here are some tips for success depending on which method of decorating you plan to try!

Chocolate Candy. This includes all your chocolates from m&m's, Twix, Butterfingers, Reese's, etc. I recommend chopping them into 1" portions and then refrigerating so they are cold. You do not add them to the cookies until about 2 minutes before the cookies are done, and keeping it cold will help them hold their shape a bit.

Candy. This recipe is NOT for actual candy, such as candy corn, sour candy, jolly rancher's, etc. That will quickly melt and ruin the bake.

    What You Will Need

The cookie is only as good as the chocolate candy you put into it. I used Twix, Kit Kats and M&M's (the hubby ate all the Reese's - they didn't stand a chance). As mentioned under Tips For Success, use chocolate candy in this tutorial.

Let's Make Leftover Halloween Candy Cookies

This tutorial is to help you create delicious and spooky Halloween cookies. Please see recipe card for full list of equipment and ingredients.

Step 1: Follow instructions on how to prepare Monster Mash Cookies. Once dough is ready but prior to baking, return here and begin with Step 2.

Step 2: Use 2 tbsp ice cream scoop to scoop out cookie dough and place on parchment / baking sheet. Place at least 2 - 3" apart.

Step 3: Bake cookies but remove at the 9 - 10 minute mark. Remove from oven and place on wire rack.

Step 4: Begin topping cookies with chocolate candy. Add as little or as much as you would like.

Step 5: Once done adding chocolate candy, place back in oven and bake for approximately another 2 minutes.

Step 6: Place baking sheet on cooling rack. Allow cookies to cool before enjoying.

    Other Fun Variations

The Monster Mash Cookie recipe can truly be a base recipe for so many other fun and creative designs. Here are some other ideas that you can give a try!

Stuffed Oreos. If finding a fun surprise inside a cookie is more your thing than this one is for you! Take a Halloween Oreo (orange creme on the inside!) and place between the cookie dough. I place 2 tbsp on the bottom, Oreo in the middle, and then 1 tbsp on top. Pinch all around to seam it closed, and then roll in a circular motion between the palms of your hands to make sure it seals up nicely.

Halloween Sprinkles. You have so many options here! You can roll the cookie in Halloween colored jimmies or nonpareils. You could add sprinkle bones or eyeballs when done baking. Use your imagination and have fun!

Skull Cookies. I used a small silicone skull mold that I purchased on Amazon to make the miniature skull cookies. I lightly sprayed baking spray into the mold, and filled it with cookie dough. Place on a baking tray and bake for about 8 minutes. Allow to cool before removing from mold. Use melted chocolate or royal icing as 'glue' to the cookies.

    Storage

These cookies are best enjoyed immediately, but if you need to store for later snacking than place in an airtight container or ziplock bag for up to 3 days. You may also refrigerate for up to 5 days in an airtight container or ziplock bag - just allow to come to room temperature a bit before enjoying.
